Paphos .... the
birthplace of Afrodite and much more!
Paphos is said to be one of the most beautiful parts of Cyprus, and its tourist industry has certainly increased in recent years. Set upon lovely sandy beaches such as Coral Bay and home to some of the islands best archaeological sites, Paphos is popular with everyone from young singles to families. Being the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, Paphos is a very cultural area, and there is plenty to see and do, including impressive archaeological treasures and many cultural heritage sites of interest.
One can visit the impressive underground Tombs of the Kings carved out of solid rock and decorated with Doric pillars. You can also visit the Pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped, before converting the Roman governor to Christianity, and making Cyprus the first country in the world to be governed by a Christian. Don't miss Kato Papho's ancient mosaics depicting Dionysos the God of wine and in the countryside visit Aphrodite's Baths, the temple of Apollo, the temple of Aphrodite, the ancient town of Kourion with a well preserved theatre, as well as beautiful churches and old monasteries in the countryside.
Modern Paphos, according to Travel-Lady magazine "is a higgledy-piggledy town, down at heel in places, with a harbour, medieval fort and laidback atmosphere". As the town lies on a rocky hill, it is naturally divided between the lower touristy area of Kato Paphos and the upper area of Paphos with many shops and the fresh fruit market. Perhaps the most characteristic picture of Kato Paphos is the mediaeval castle overlooking the old fishing harbour. The sea-front promenade with cafeterias and fish restaurants is highly popular with tourists and locals alike. Cultural events ranging from operas to art exhibitions and concerts regularly take place here. There are numerous hotels in Kato Paphos, along with excellent restaurants and entertainment spots, part of the modern town's varied nightlife.
The countryside of Paphos, sheltered from the north by the Troodos mountains and reaching the Medteranean sea to the south, is serenely beautiful throughout the year with fertile plains, citrus fruit plantations, rocky coves, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Although still a fairly undeveloped resort, Paphos is a thriving coastal city. The authorities have invested heavily in irrigation dams, a desalination plant and water distribution works, road infrastructure and the development of Paphos International Airport whilst private initiatives have concentrated on hotels, apartments and villa developments and shopping malls.
Endless
blue skies and a worldwide known hospitality, make Paphos the ideal destination
for holidays, retirement and permanent residency.
